Community garden for African Caribbean and Asian elders at Nubian Life centre and local community

The Josiah Braithwaite Community Garden originated as a collaboration between Permablitz London, Living Medicine and the Nubian Life Resource Centre in White City, West London. The Nubian Life Resource Centre provides Adult Day Care Services for African, African Caribbean and Asian elders and are experts in meeting the needs of elders with issues such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes and physical and visual impairments. The garden provides them with a stimulating sensory environment, fresh produce to include in their meals and ingredients for simple natural remedies.

It also provides an educational resource for the local community – in particular families keen for their children to learn about food growing, cooking and outdoor crafts. This is being developed this year with an intergenerational, multi-cultural  ‘Growing Together’ project which offers seeds and growing materials to families, other local residents and the elders from the Nubian Life Centre. These will be accompanied by a series of online workshops showing how to grow from seed.

As well as food plants we have a wide selection of plants growing that we harvest for herbal remedies and the project also organises simple herbal remedy workshops. We run workshops introducing people across London to permaculture. We also provide sessions on various aspects of gardening and permaculture for the wider London permaculture community and Capital Growth. As a showcase garden for Permablitz London the garden educates permablitz designers.
