A Communicator

Strategic Communications Coordinator for the Permaculture Association June 2014 - February 2022.

  • Led on communications for International Permaculture Convergence IPCUK and worked in the events team on convergences.
  • I enhanced email communications,
  • steadily plugged away at social media,
  • co-edited Permaculture Works, and always made time to support colleagues.
  • Completed a brand review for the organisation.
  • Co-ordinated the Permaculture Ambassadors project, to help spread permaculture - you too can communicate excellently.
  • Helped publicise 6 successful, profitable convergences.

A bio as if someone else wrote it:

Ryan has worked professionally in communications for over 10 years; as Campaigns and Communications Coordinator at a Students' Union, as a freelance digital communications consultant, and at the Permaculture Association for 8 years.

He has a first class degree in Film & TV Production Ba (Hons). He also holds a Permaculture Design Certificate. In 2020, he co-founded Earthed Up! Edible and useful plants nursery co-operative.

A gardener and educator

Ryan gardens over a patchwork of local sites - a creative solution to not having access to any one sizeable site. Over the last 10 years he's experience of starting at least a dozen gardens and the systems that comes with that - water harvesting, composting, building coldframes, making beds and so on. He has an affinity for perennial, low-intervention systems.

Ryan is an Educator member of the Permaculture Association. Ryan leads workshops with a dynamic and active teaching style. He loves sharing positive, practical solutions, teaching practical gardening skills as well as permaculture and forest gardening. He also runs workshops and occassionally offers mentoring for digital communications.

I have the following:

- 2 young children who I spend a lot of time with

- type 1 diabetes

- a history of chronic fatigue syndrome

- an e-mountain bike with a Burley kids trailer and a flatbed trailer

- employment allowing me freedom to work flexibly from home, part time

- forest garden allotment

- 3 backyard hens with deep litter bedding, occasionally spoiled with homegrown sunflower seed

- hot compost bins

- kitchen vermicomposting bins

- a cupboard full of jams and chutneys and never enough home dried fruit leather

- demijohns of fermenting cider, mixed fruit wines

- a woodpile with just enough hardwood for this winter yet but plenty of kindling from fruit tree prunings...

- guerilla native tree planting project at a local park and woodland edge

- a recreation ground (pocket park) behind our house, where we're sowing wildflowers and I've planted apple trees in the hedge, among the bramble patch

- a co-operative nursery business with 2 co-workers, growing 1000 plants at 3 sites in Derbyshire

- a growing collection of workshop plans: intro to permaculture, intro to forest gardening, 'propagate, prosper, preserve', plant propagation, and more. I can teach you if you let me.

I'm interested in supporting more food projects in the East Midlands, please get in touch if I can help.
