Permaculture off grid smallholding
Lackan Cottage Farm

Lackan Cottage Farm is a 6.5 acre permaculture smallholding in Co. Down established in 2012 by Steve and Claire Golemboski-Byrne. The farm is home to Birch Cottage, an eco-retrofitted 1950's building that incorporates many natural and low impact materials and techniques, and which we let on a self catering basis. Other projects include:

  • an acre of mixed native coppice and forest garden
  • our large veg garden and polytunnels
  • rainwater harvesting
  • greywater reedbeds
  • strawbale roundhouse
  • timber frame / strawbale / earth plaster building
  • solar greenhouse
  • solar and wind renewable energy systems

We often run short courses such as An introduction to permaculture, Resilient living, and a range of skills based courses on topics such as basket weaving, earth plastering, renewable energy, and hold a couple of open days each year.

If you would like visits, how should people arrange their visit?
Contact is through the website, and we encourage people to give a donation for our time, suggested minimum donation £5 per person.
Sustainable transport options
By bus to Rathfriland or Ballyroney and then we are 2 miles on foot or bike from there. Sadly rural public transport in NI is woeful.
