A small forest garden in Charleston, Dundee
An image of part of the forest garden in late Summer.

A small forest garden that was started 6 years ago. I discovered permaculture a couple of years after finding my love of gardening and began to apply principles in different areas of the garden.

The garden has been grown on a budget, materials are rescued, nothing is thrown away. Plants are swapped, rescued or grown from seed where possible. Everything is done considering wildlife - the birds, insects and other creatures that live here. Native species are used along with other resilient plants.

I love perennial vegetables and have found many native edibles too. Medicinal herbs are another interest and are dotted about.

The garden was started before I was aware of permsculture, so there is no design as such. I spend a lot of time observing, thinking, reconsidering, editing and dreaming about changes.

I work full time and have a chronic illness so the garden needs to be low maintenance and self sustaining. I have a big focus on water usage and minimising unnecessary water use with straw mulching. I also have chickens, who contribute to the composting system and make for very happy plants and thousands of worms!
