A smallholding on top of a hill - providing food and showing permaculture design
Aerial view, Brunton Banktop LAND Centre, Northumberland

Based on top (literally) of Hadrian's Wall, this half acre smallholding is the first LAND Centre in the stunning county of Northumberland. Being on top of a south west facing slope at 210 metres provides challenges. Here we practice permaculture principles and design, to produce the food we need - and look at water harvesting and management, woodchip & composting, biochar production and use and close by we also manage hazel coppice and graft and grow on apple trees. Registered as a LAND Centre in autumn 2019.

This relatively small space is crammed with interest, while also maintaining enough wild areas to have a great wild bird population. Based on "rock" on top of a hill, it has been a journey since 2014 to use permaculture design as a design system to get the most out of the land, whilst providing a place of peace, relaxation and nature connection for its human inhabitants.
