The Knowledge Exchange for Enterprise in Permaculture (KEEP) project encourages and supports permaculture-inspired entrepreneurs and researches the current state of permaculture enterprise in the UK.

The project ran through 2016, its aims were to:

  1. conduct preliminary research on the current state of permaculture enterprises and entrepreneurship;
  2. identify and explore key factors underlying the success of permaculture enterprises;
  3. identify, prepare and share case studies of outstanding permaculture enterprises;
  4. develop knowledge resources and knowledge sharing processes which will encourage a new wave of permaculture-inspired enterprises and;
  5. assist the Permaculture Association to create an enterprise hub.

The KEEP project has: produced a map of 159 permaculture-inspired enterprises and potential enterprises in the UK surveyed 39 permaculture-inspired businesses to find out type of business, turnover, age of business, plans for growth, profile of owner/s etc. conducted in-depth interviews with 19 permaculture entrepreneurs, learning about their personal journeys, the story of their business, barriers they had encountered and their advice to new entrepreneurs held workshops attended by over 130 current and potential permaculture entrepreneurs.

Outputs from the project included: a Permaculture Enterprise Guide website, containing advice and inspiring case studies for those setting up new permaculture inspired enterprises.a full day workshop in London to report on findings (2016), presentation at the Institute of Small Business and Enterprise conference in Paris (2016), and an article on the Permaculture magazine website.

The KEEP project was led by Professor Audley Genus of Kingston University and the Permaculture Association (by Dr Chris Warburton Brown, Research Coordinator). Dr Marfuga Iskandarova was the project's research assistant.

The KEEP project was funded by a Research and Knowledge Exchange (RAKE) grant from the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council and the British Academy of Management.
