This planet is the PROOF of our existence. The recent cases of heatwaves and an increase in natural calamities across the globe are not mere coincidences but searing consequences of the harm corporations, institutions and humans have been inflicting on this planet. According to the recent reports by IPCC and other organizations, adapting to climate change while working to lessen the impact expected in the long-term should be our goal, and in this, we need to work with local and indigenous communities most impacted by this global phenomenon. We need collective action to contribute what we can in the ways that are feasible to combat this issue. One In An ARMY, a charity collective composed of BTS fans, is celebrating BTS 9th anniversary by going global and collaborating with grassroots orgs working towards soil restoration, food sovereignty and permaculture. BTS is a septet from South Korea, globally popular for their music and positive messages.

Why your support is needed

In Nepal, over 80% of the working population are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. Rising population, out-migration and inappropriate aid programmes, which often try to replace traditional practices with "something better" have combined to undermine the sustainability of traditional agriculture and even culture. The result is a disempowered people with unequal access to basic needs, struggling to make ends meet despite working all hours and yet not even able to grow enough food. We are changing that and making a big difference to people’s lives, and you can help.

About the Himalayan Permaculture Centre

The Himalayan Permaculture Centre (HPC) is a grassroots organisation  run by motivated and trained farmers from Surkhet and Humla districts, in Karnali Province of Western Nepal. Its mission is to collaboratively design resilient, abundant households and communities that have holistic ecological, social and economic sustainability.

HPC conducts demonstration, training, resource production and research in 32 villages. Aligned with local communities, it devises and implements locally-appropriate sustainable programs with a unique cross-sectoral approach that integrates Food Sovereignty, Health, Education, Livelihoods and Capacity building. This holistic vision results in abundant villages that embrace a variety of livelihoods, culture, biodiversity and  ethical governance. These villages are where people can live in harmony with their environment and are not forced to leave because of dire economic conditions.

As well as improving farm productivity using agro-ecological approaches that regenerate soil, water and biodiversity, HPC’s activities boost health by promoting wellness through better diet - organic and nutrient-dense food is grown, leading to a better diet from more fruits and vegetables. Better kitchen hygiene and toilets reduce waterborne and other diseases. Health is also improved by reduced smoke in kitchens, health-awareness and clean drinking water. HPC has also helped to revamp local education through adult practical literacy classes and support to schools. It has improved economic  resilience through income-generation activities such as beekeeping, local textiles, milling, carpentry, blacksmithing and, above all, improved farm productivity. Access to credit from local micro-finance groups enables local enterprises to thrive, based on an abundant ecology. Finally, it has increased the ability of communities in design, decision-making and governance through training and support..
