Carbon Farming: Agricultural Climate Change Mitigation

25 October 2016

18:00 - 20:30, Lift Islington, London, N1 9PW

We're delighted to announce that Eric Toensmeier, a leading North American expert on carbon farming is in the UK for just 2 days at the end of October.

Eric has kindly agreed to work with the Permaculture Association to host a special talk and panel discussion around his work and it's implementation here in the UK.

This is a one-off opportunity that we highly recommend to anybody working in the farming, climate or environmental spheres. There are only 60 places available for this event. To book your place, please visit HERE.

Why is this important?

We believe that this subject matter is of vital importance, particularly in light of our reaching the 400ppm carbon dioxide threshold. Improved soil management through regenerative agriculture is one of the few solutions that could potentially turn the tide by sequestering large amounts of carbon in living soil. Working together to support this work and pioneers like Eric is one of the great challenges and opportunities of our time.

About the Session

Agriculture and land use contribute about 25% of human carbon emissions. However a suite of carbon farming practices sequester carbon in soils and aboveground biomass, contributing to climate change mitigation.

This presentation will provide an overview of these practices and their potential, with some examples of practices suitable to the UK, including a number of agroforestry practices with particularly high levels of sequestration. We'll also look at some of the additional benefits of carbon farming including ecosystem services, food security, climate justice. www.carbonfarmingsolution.com

Eric has studied useful perennial plants and their roles in agroforestry systems for over two decades. Eric has owned a seed company, managed an urban farm that leased parcels to Hispanic and refugee growers, and provided planning and business trainings to farmers. He is the author of The Carbon Farming Solution: A Global Toolkit of Perennial Crops and Regenerative Agricultural Practices for Climate Change Mitigation and Food Security.

In December 2015, Eric was invited to present at the COP21 talks, taking part in a panel discussion moderated by the Vice-Chair of the IPCC. His book on agricultural carbon sequestration was distributed widely at the talks.
