Course summary

Can you imagine anywhere better to learn about sustainable living than where it is applied every day? This is what Karuna Permaculture Project can offer you on this unique introductory Permaculture course.
*The course is offered at very competitive rates in liaison with Aberystwyth University (if you require a concession rate please contact the university). It is accredited.
atural ecosystems are robust and sustainable – they are dynamic, diverse and respond to change. Aren’t these exactly the characteristics we need when we design human systems? Isn’t this the case for everything from a business to a garden; a transport system to a community group? These features are exactly what we try to capture in permaculture. Most people have heard of permaculture only in the context of agriculture and gardening, but it is a design process that is much more versatile than that. Based around a set of ethics and principles, permaculture design allows us to apply our understanding of the functioning of natural systems to any human process or organisation and, thus, to deliver strong and flexible solutions. In this course we will learn about the design cycle and begin to build up a permaculture ‘toolbox’ that will allow us to produce and implement permaculture designs. Amongst other things, we will practice observation skills, think about patterns, discuss ethics, consider relationships between elements within a design and learn about the range of permaculture principles, as well as looking at practical examples of permaculture design. The course will culminate with a design exercise, allowing us to apply what we have learned in a way that will benefit Karuna.
