As permaculture practitioners, many of us recognise the importance of showcasing the transformative work happening in our communities. Whether it’s securing funding, improving project outcomes, or inspiring others to take action, demonstrating our impact has never been more essential. However, the reality of tracking and evaluating the success of our projects often feels out of reach. This challenge became evident through the partial results of the Permaculture Association Britain's International Permaculture Survey, where practitioners have shared the main barriers they face in monitoring and evaluating their work: 34% lack the skills or tools, 32% feel they don’t have enough time, people, or capacity, 28% cited insufficient funding. Others expressed uncertainty about where to start or how to measure the multifaceted benefits of permaculture practices. These challenges resonate with many in our movement, highlighting the need for accessible, practical support. That’s where Permaculture Impact comes in. What is Permaculture Impact? Permaculture Association Britain is pleased to be partnering with Permaculture Impact, a new learning platform designed to help permaculture projects collect evidence of their outcomes in ways that are simple, relevant, and achievable. It offers free, self-paced Action Learning courses that guide projects through the process of creating an evaluation plan and collecting meaningful data. Their aim is to make monitoring and evaluation accessible to everyone, no matter the size of your project or the resources you have available. The platform helps you build an Impact Portfolio - a practical tool to communicate your achievements to funders, stakeholders, and your wider community. A learning journey that fits you Permaculture Impact’s courses are designed to provide practical, step-by-step guidance for creating an evaluation plan that fits your project’s unique needs. Whether you’re running a small local initiative or a large-scale program, the platform equips you with tools to measure outcomes and tell your story effectively. Several inspiring permaculture projects around the world have collaborated with the Permaculture Impact team to test and improve the material offered, including: The Nutritious Trees Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which supports reforestation and sustainable livelihoods by planting nutrient-rich trees. See picture below, with project participants. The Malawi School Permaculture Clubs project, where students are learning to grow food and develop regenerative land management skills. Permacultura Mediterranea in Mallorca, Spain, which strengthens community resilience through permaculture education and local food systems. These projects demonstrate the diversity of permaculture in action, and their participation has shaped the development of their courses to ensure they are practical and adaptable to different contexts. Collaborate, share and learn together Outcome evaluation doesn’t have to be a solitary effort. Permaculture Impact fosters an online community where projects can share experiences, ask questions, and support one another as they work through the courses. The integrated forums and upcoming Action Learning Groups (launching March 2025) provide spaces to discuss progress and find motivation. Looking ahead Permaculture Impact is still in its development phase, with new courses and features being added throughout 2025 and beyond, including an Impact Showcase to highlight permaculture as a solution to planetary crises. By building a culture of evaluation within the permaculture movement, we can amplify our collective impact and inspire others to join us in creating a regenerative future.
