Opportunities

land based co-op group forming

Hi, my name is Jonathan. I want to spread the word about a land-based co-op I'm setting up ideally near Bradford as that is where I'm from but I would consider elsewhere depending on the group we get together. Just me at the moment. Anyone who wants to get involved please let me know! Below is what I'm thinking but this will be a project for every member to plan so please let me know your ideas. When there are at least a handful of people I will call a meeting for us all to meet each other and find out what everyone wants from it. The process is to set up a legal structure, make a business plan, find land, perhaps get a loan from Radical Routes for the deposit and take out a mortgage with the Ecology Building Society probably. There's more to it than that obviously but we can make it happen!

Aims (some are aims over a long period of time as they won't be possible straight off the bat):

  • Create a permaculture plan for the whole site after a long period of observation.
  • Grow as much of our own needs as possible (food, fuel, timber).
  • To rely on the sun's energy (in growing things, passive solar heating, solar panels etc).
  • A large forest garden.
  • Produce no waste.
  • Produce renewable electricity on site.
  • Consensus decision making and effective conflict resolution.
  • Multiple generations able to be part of the community.
  • Vegetarian.
  • Able to take visitors.
  • All building work we undertake to use local materials (eg earth, wood, stone) and a high ecological standard.
  • Create resilience in response to peak oil and climate change.
  • Minimise fossil fuel usage but use it where appropriate to work towards the above aims.

My motivations are to enhance and protect the land, live as a community and grow our own needs first and foremost. I think now is the time to sink what money we can get (from part time jobs, and benefits can also go towards it) in to something that will provide for ourselves and future generations. I think collective ownership is important so that we can reap the rewards from all the work we invest. A co-op structure means that we are our own landlords and people are free to move in and out without needing to be bought out.

It's a project to live on the land, as I believe this is the best way of getting to know the land and being able to observe it and respond to changes that occur. For homes, I like to think of cob buildings (which uitilise earth) and using local wood and stone. Ambitious though! Different sites will have different possibilities and planning permission is difficult although I know of a fair few precedents elsewhere. All 5 of the land based co-ops that I have visited have some sort of very large farmhouse or old mansion where everyone lives. They eat money in maintenance but at least you can move in straight away.

Anyway, that's all I can think of right now. Originally I just wanted a housing co-op in the city but I thought I might as well and go the whole 9 yards 'cos our monetary system and reliance on fossil fuels don't seem up to much to me. And I thought about moving to an existing one but this is a chance to create a whole new permaculture site! The more land in the hands of environmentalists the better and we need as many working examples as possible to convince others another way is possible. So I did think of a little more, but that really is it from me. Hope to hear from you!

Volunteer vacancy: Project Coordinator and Administrator, Holy Isle

What we need:
We need a volunteer to help with two renewable energy electricity generation projects and to provide back up for general office administration. Duration: April – October 2010, with option to extend.

The Project:
The Holy Isle Project is directed by Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation master in the Kagyu tradition and is open to all, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Since Rokpa Trust bought the Holy Isle in 1992 it has been Lama Yeshe's intention to provide an ecological sustainable environment where individuals can develop and experience inner peace, regardless of their background or spiritual tradition. The Centre for World Peace and Health is open to people of all faiths. This is in keeping with his wish to make the island available to as wide a group of people as possible. The stewardship and care of Holy Isle's beautiful natural environment is high on Lama Yeshe's agenda. With a far reaching vision, the Holy Isle Project is working to address the spiritual value of the land through restoring and conserving the natural ecology.

The Centre:
The Centre for World Peace and Health is located at the North end of Holy Isle and is open to visitors throughout most of the year. There is an ongoing retreat and course programme and visitors are welcome to stay at the Centre for their own personal retreat or holiday breaks as well as taking part in one of the many courses on offer from March through to October. Accommodation and full board can be provided for over 60 guests.

• Fund raising

The office administration work is to provide back up for day-to-day tasks:

Speaker for pagan gathering in London

We're running a 3 day gathering in August this year (5th,6th&7th), in London,  called The Artemis Gathering. This year, considering the current climate, we have decided to base the gathering on climate change and
how to do your bit for the environment.

Wadden Sea Festival, Mando Island - call for permaculture artists

Foundation Wadden Art invites permacultural artists and ecological artists for the followng project:

Foundation Wadden Art organises for artists, permaculturalists and others interested, within the Wadden Sea Festival 2010 in Denmark the project "Any Questions?".

The selection is open for artists in all disciplines from all over the world. The deadline is 21st April 2010.

The festival is 4-12 September 2010.

Mandø is the smallest island of Denmark. In the winter the population counts about 40 people. In the summer this number grows to a much higher number; thousands visit the island because of the silence and to be close to nature, to see the seals on the vast sand plates around the island, to walk in the tide water and to watch the everchanging horizon under the sun and the clouds.

A few hundred years ago, a few men went to the mainland for their business. That night a storm came up, flooded the island and drowned the population. The 7 men decided to marry again, returned and rebuilt the island. They can be regarded as the founders of the present time Mandø, and their traces are still visible. The history of Mandø is a stunning one.

The nature on and around Mandø is likewise stunning and generous, yet not easy to comprehend. The first impression is that of emptiness. The sands around Mandø look empty, the sky is most times a bit clouded, the wind plays an important role. The rythm on the island is dictated by the tide. In one day one can only get an overall impression and conclude that everything worthwhile has been seen. But after a day or two one starts to see the hidden treasures of Mandø, visible in landscapes and horizons, where a constant supply for life's necessities is hidden, generously offered when discovered.

This is what Any Questions? is about; Find hidden and stunning relations and visions on those relations between nature and mankind on Mandø .  You will find detailed information in the website, www.waddenart.eu/any-questions
