Highbury Orchard Community CIC
We are a community interest company aiming to reconnect people and land by caring for both. We are based at Highbury, Birmingham, adjacent to the park of the same name. We are transforming wasteground into a forest garden, so far with fruit trees, herbs and fruit-bearing shrubs.
Since our site is surrounded by mature trees, we have an ideal setting for forest school.
We have set up a project, funded by Awards for All with regular sessions for families to get involved with nature. This has brought us to the attention of nearby schools which are also looking at ways to bring their pupils out to the park for outdoor learning sessions. We are writing a handbook about the park to encourage their visits.
With some help from Birmingham Friends of the Earth and the Woodland Trust, we are planting wildflower stations and nectar-producing trees though the park to encourage bees. Last September we had a Honey Fun Day to celebrate our honey harvest and find out more about the part that bees play in our food chain.
