Wishtree is a 5 acre offgrid, LAND learner project in North West Devon, demonstrating Forest Gardening and is home to North Devon Permaculture community Interest Company.
We concentrate mainly on demonstrating how forest gardening can be used in residential gardening situations as well as small holdings. We run a small nursery, selling plants online and from the site. We also grow people, through our Wishtree Growing Group, supporting those with mental illness to reconnect with the outdoors, using permaculture techniques.
We are completely off-grid , no mains water or electricity. We use solar power and rain water catchment.
Other techniques we are using are swales for out pancake patch. This is where we are experimenting with spelt and other annual grains such as amaranth and quinoa.
Hedgelaying, coppicing and pollarding, incorporating new hedges in and around the land for habitat, windbreaks and food and fuel.
There are several ponds on site with small ditches linknig them up. This is part of the water management, capturing and storing water, for habitat and redundancy for the nursery and for thermal mass.
There is a small orchard and several clearings to accommodate people for gatherings and outdoor teaching sessions.
Other elements at Wishtree:
Variations of habitats to accommodate specific wildlife such as lizards
Bramble the cat
(coming soon) ducks and chickens
The Pod (volunteer space)
Several camping areas
