From woodland ecology and basic site surveying, to trees, woodlands, wildlife and the law, this course will give outdoor educators a sound knowledge of their environment and how to maximise its potential, whilst maintaining a minimal impact approach. In addition, this Woodland Management course will also look at pruning and harvesting wood, hazard tree recognition, as well as theories of minimal impact and leave no trace. By deepening our understanding and responsibilities to the countryside, we will be guiding future generations to not only enjoy the woods, but to truly respect and understand them. THE COURSE WILL GIVE YOU Understanding of the woodland structure Ability to identify materials for sustainable harvesting Ability to prune small diameter wood correctly Understanding of the importance of deadwood for conservation Basic understanding of woodland ecology Greater awareness to tree risks in the outdoor classroom Understanding of legislation related to trees and the woodland THIS COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR Forest School Leaders or anyone using a woodland environment as an outdoor space for learning and development. It is also suitable for anyone with an interest in the subject. Nick Ward has been working professionally within woodland management and arboriculture for over 20 years. His passion for trees and woodlands has led him down a varied career path, from forestry worker, climbing arborist, research tree climber to woodland manager, educator and consultant. As well as holding formal qualifications in Woodland management and arboriculture, he also holds qualifications for outdoor leadership and teaching and has been teaching outdoor skills and environmental education for the last 17 years.
