Course summary

Two day traditional willow basket weaving workshop in which we will explore different possibilities for round basket making.

Potential projects could be:-

Top Hat Basket: An all time favourite! Make this small comfortable round shopper with concave sides and a rod border, ideal for a quick trip into town! Alternatively a larger straight or curved sided shopper can be made.

Waste Paper Basket: An essential and often overlooked household item. Incorporating different patterns in the side weaves and finished with a plaited border. There is no reason why your bin can’t be a work of art!

Harvesting Basket: A shallow, curved sided basket with rope handles or finger holes. Using rings of natural coloured willow to add texture and interest. A beautiful and practical basket for flinging your onions, broad beans and peas into whilst out in the vegetable garden or harvesting apples in the autumn.

You will make your chosen willow basket (Top Hat, Waste Paper or Harvester) during this two day workshop. You will learn traditional ‘stake and strand’ basket making, using prepared basketry willow plus some grown at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on the wetland system to add colour and texture.

This workshop is most suitable for those who have previously done some willow weaving. Beginners are also welcome but should plan to make a smaller basket and concentrate less on shape and fancier weaves. If you’d like to attend our Beginner’s Willow Basket Weaving workshop this will be running on the day before on Thursday 21st February 2019.
