Course summary

The Patrick Whitefield Associates Permaculture Design Course gives you what you can’t get from books: the experience of permaculture design. It centres on a series of practical exercises in which you develop a design for an actual piece of land, either a domestic garden or a smallholding according to your choice, with guidance from your tutors throughout. There’s no better way of learning than by doing, and by the end of the course you will be ready to go home and design your own place for real.

The main tutors are Caroline Aitken -director of Patrick Whitefield Associates and Matt Dunwell -permaculture pioneer and the farmer of Ragmans Lane. Additional teachers include Steve Pickup -expert in living willow structures, Carine van Gestel- craftswoman, designer and teacher, Juanfran Lopez -permaculture researcher working at Ragmans, Simon Cutter- innovative farmer of Model Farm and Sue Clarke at The Resilience Centre.

While our courses have a land-focused approach we include something for everyone whether they are in the middle of a city or have land in the country. Permaculture principles can be applied to any situation and we provide useful information, practical skills and clear understanding that you can apply to your life and your surroundings. This includes people-care sessions to help us with working in groups, community and in our personal relationships in acknowledgement of the importance that good communication and co-operation have in a sustainable future.
