We will visit the gardens and features of Juniper Hall and consider how they fit into the permaculture model, and what design changes we may suggest based on what we have learned. We'll be spending time outside so bring wet weather gear. We will learn about some of the exciting solutions that often result from permaculture designs, such as forest gardening, community supported agriculture, mulching and no-dig gardening. We will talk about how to survey your environment, creating maps, identifying weather patterns and microclimates, the soils, and examining what works well and not so well. Then we will practice some of the analysis techniques used in permaculture to help us ensure that our designs are appropriate to the characteristics of environment and reflect the needs and vision of the people involved. We will look at great examples of permaculture projects, including designs created for other Field Studies Centres. You will be introduced to some fascinating books and resources in permaculture, and what you might want to do next on your permaculture journey. You will come away with a basic understanding of permaculture and how it could be applied to your back garden or your life. It is an excellent step for those who are considering the full 12 day Permaculture Design Course, available in many formats across the UK.
