Course summary

This course focuses on edible and poisonous species of fungi. It includes an overview of their historical and sociological relationship with today’s Britain.

The fungal kingdom is almost totally ignored, yet it underpins all plant and animal life. This course looks at the way humans and mushrooms interact. It shows how species vary according to habitat – be this woodland or pasture. Although it addresses all aspects of the complex world of mycology, it focuses in particular on edible and poisonous species. It includes an overview of their historical and sociological relationship with today’s Britain and Europe. Students will study both in the classroom and in the field (wood) to gather and identify fungi species. Students will be expected to produce a 500-word profile of a chosen species.
