In some systems ongoing monitoring is essential, such as for aquaculture systems for fish. Without regular monitoring these systems can quickly decline if problems arise. Monitoring can take many forms – direct observation to look for build up of pests in the orchard, soil samples to detect longer term changes in its quality, or electronic monitoring of thermal performance in buildings. If social goals are important you may monitor numbers of visitors, or satisfaction of employees. Identifying what aspects of your project need to be regularly monitored will help you to make sure the systems you have installed are working the way you want them to.
