POST-PDC PRACTICAL COURSE 2019, July 7th to 14th

http://www.permaculturinginportugal.net/post-pdc-practical-course-2019/

A PDC (Permaculture Design Course) is a powerful and comprehensive introduction to the workings of natural systems, the necessity to work with nature rather than against it, how to design for regeneration, and the importance of designing to context in a holistic, whole systems way, stacking functions, building in resilience and reconceptualising linear ‘production lines’ into circular self-maintaining systems. It covers every climate on the planet and every regenerative agricultural technique known to man.

It’s the theory. The foundation. And although the course features daily practical sessions, it doesn’t pretend to equip people with the full range of skills they’ll need to implement permaculture designs. Often permaculture graduates without a background of working on the land can end up feeling paralysed, not knowing where to start, or end up taking a second or third PDC in an attempt to find what they’re missing.

Enter the Post-PDC Practical. Whilst all this knowledge is fresh in your mind and bursting to find an outlet, this is a chance to put it into practice with support and supervision and gain the confidence to go out there and do great things.

The course is open to all participants in this year’s Permaculture Design Course. It’s also open to anyone else who’s taken a PDC and wants to benefit from some hands-on experience in a supportive environment.

Summary:

Biodynamic Farming was the first form of ecological farming system, arising in 1924. It has also proven to be one of the most sustainable forms of farming with the highest levels of soil biodiversity found on farms.

This course is designed for the gardener, grower or farmer who wants to find out more about the principles and practices of biodynamic systems in a simple and practical way. You will cover the context of biodynamic systems and the Demeter regulations; how to carry out the practices of biodynamic systems, the use of the preparations and the calendar on both a practical and theoretical way. You will look in-depth at how preparations are made by working with local biodynamic practitioners who will give an insight in to the preparations and their uses. The course will be held on a registered biodynamic farm and will enable you to carry out some basic biodynamic systems on your own land.

Please note the course runs for two weekends -
Saturday 16th March - Sunday 17th March and Saturday 27th April - Sunday 28th April

Summary:

Explore the role of fermentation in food preparation, its health benefits, and the many forms fermented food can take. We’ll prepare sauerkrauts, salsas, kvass, kimchis, sodas and beers, sourdough breads, kombuchas, kefirs … And as the week progresses, we’ll explore our growing sensitivity to the wisdom of the plant world by letting our collective imaginations loose to try new combinations of flavours and techniques. Those living locally can take some away with them (and anyone else who can fit them into their luggage). Those who are staying on for the Permaculture Design Course immediately afterwards can sample them too and start to pass on what they’ve learned to other participants in the PDC.

Summary:

In this half day group workshop we will be providing an introduction to building basic 12v pedal-powered generators, and exploring how they can be used.

Together we will build generators that can turn human power into electricity with the addition of a regular bicycle, using simple materials and a range of hand tools. We will then set up the system and test it on a range of appliances, lighting bulbs and running a small projector using nothing but the energy provided by a couple of active human beings.

If you are interested in learning about renewable energy systems, this workshop will allow you to get hands-on access to bike generation technology. As with all our DIY energy workshops, you will learn what energy is and what it can do, and gain an understanding of the electrical basics: current, voltage, resistance, power, and series and parallel circuits.

The workshop will take place at the DEE studio in Ladywell, and will start at 12pm, and finish around 4.30pm.

- All materials are included.
- No previous experience required.

Summary:

Think like a tree six week programme:
We associate woodlands, forests and other natural ecosystems with resilience, longevity and harmony, but often struggle to experience these in our own lives.
By exploring principles derived from nature, this programme will guide you step-by-step through a design cycle that can be used for a wide range of personal circumstances – relationships, health, wellbeing, leisure and work.
You may want to make a significant change, some small improvements, or just want to be more content or effective in your everyday life. Whatever your circumstances this course has something to offer.
The course has been designed to be appropriate for absolutely everyone’s circumstances and stage of life – whether you are starting out on life’s journey, switching direction, dealing with a challenge, or planning your future.
Come prepared to think, being open to seeing yourself and the natural world in a different light, and to challenge existing beliefs…

The programme comprises six two-hour sessions with activities to do at home. During the six week programme you will build up a design that is personal to you. All course materials are provided and you will go away with a toolkit of tools and principles that can be used again and again.

Beautiful and inspiring locations

The programme:
You will work in groups and individually to explore the three elements of the course:
the natural principles and nature’s patterns – learned from observing nature
the design cycle – allow us to put the principles into action
the tools – give us the means to get where we want to be.
