Summary:

We are excited to announce a PDC with room for 24 participants in the beautiful archipelago of Orkney led by Graham Bell. A unique location, with a fascnating and often underappreciated place in Britain's cultural and historical heritage, Orkney provides the backdrop for this opportunity supported by Pebble Trust, via Permaculture Scotland's ScotLAND Project, and hosted by Stromness Community Garden. This will hopefully be the first such course of many to target social, economic and ecological regeneration in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

The price of this course is on a sliding scale. The full rate, including 12 days of tuition, lunches, trips out and evening events is:

  • £300, for unwaged or irregular earners
  • £450, for regular earners on a low household income
  • £700, for those who are financially secure
  • £950, for those who are financially comfortable

Payment by instalments will be possible, as long as the full amount is paid within a month of the course ending. The most expensive ticket is essentially a 'gift ticket', as it enables more people who can afford the cheapest ticket to attend (which is essentially a bursary rate as this undercuts our 'break even point'). If you are very keen to attend the course, but find that the cost is prohibitive, please get in touch to find some alternative arrangement.

For those who need it, we have arranged for accommodation options near to the venue. August is the peak of peak season for Orkney, so we are very lucky to have this accommodation reserved for you! Please see articles linked for further information about the options available, and enquire with Rachael when you book to reserve your place.

Summary:

The 72hr curriculum is certified by the Permaculture Association of Britain.
We have adapted our course material to our location and relative interests. For example, we offer a rural focus with small holding, vegetable growing, regenerative agriculture, and food forests as some of the themes that are included.
You can expect guest speakers, field trips and hands on activities that are chosen to enhance your learning.

Throughout the course we work to build community, friendship and meaningful networks, along with ensuring that all participants are well fed, and cared for and to provide a relaxed, yet focused and inspiring experience within a safe space.

COURSE DETAILS
This first part of the course includes exploring the ethics that guide permaculture practitioners: caring for the earth, caring for people and sharing our planet’s resources. These ethics have a massive influence on choices we must make to regenerate the land and live abundantly.
We then examine the principles of ecology and permaculture design. These principles are the core of permaculture and will be reiterated throughout the course.
Afterwards we will study design frameworks and methods, and learners will have a chance to engage with these over a few design projects. Everyone will have the chance to present a design project by the end of the course.

Pachawa is an ecology centre in the south of Portugal that I have been consulting for to develop the Permaculture Design. It is a great opportunity to spend time on an emerging Permaculture site and experience what it means to design, implement and maintain full Permaculture systems.
The surroundings are just amazing and include a river (walking distance) and stunning beaches and hikes!

The venue of the course is involved in many regenerative activities including an organic farm, a research centre and one of the few eco-building companies in Italy. The project is very active in Permaculture and is one of the few places visited by Geoff Lawton for the reactivation of an abandoned village through Permaculture design. The abandoned village will be visited during one of the free afternoons. Moreover, the site hosts the biggest, legally recognised, adobe eco-building in Europe!

Learn at one of the most established Permaculture projects in Europe—the off-the-grid Permaculture education center, Terra Alta. With 10 years as a permaculture site-in-development, a center for research and education, and with over 20 Permaculture Design Certificate Courses (PDCs) taught, Terra Alta, led by visionary Permaculture teacher Pedro Valdjiu, offers Permaculture education at the highest level. Alongside Permaculture, Terra Alta is committed to bioregionalism, evidenced by the involvement of local guest teachers and by the Waldorf school, "Escola da Terra", that Pedro Valdjiu and his life partner, educator Rita Seixas run which, together with Terra Alta form the nonprofit “Waldorf Association of Sintra”.

The two-week PDC is an internationally recognized intensive program that equips students with:
a comprehensive understanding of the concepts of Permaculture tools and know-how to design your own regenerative projects the basics for land design and whole-systems thinking tools to better navigate society as well as your own inner landscape.

The course is an introduction and stepping stone towards advanced land-design or teacher training programs. That being said, we support students’ continuing education through offering lifetime access to our knowledge base (read more about it below) and by providing recommendations for advanced programs you may want to take after the PDC. Formats vary from locale to locale, tailored to suit the local environment and expertise of the teaching team. Like other PDCs around the world, Terra Alta's PDC has at its core Bill Mollison's 72-hour curriculum. David Holmgren’s seven domains of permaculture action are also paramount in our permaculture teachings. Also in line with other PDCs, ours is designed to reflect the conditions of our locale—the beautiful bioregion of Sintra. Pedro is a certified teacher through the UK Permaculture Association.

Permaculture Kernow’s 11 module
Certificated Permaculture Design Course.
This course promises to be quite an adventure, as we delve deeply into the life changing world of permaculture.
Participants will have the opportunity to discover all facets of permaculture in live online sessions and also have hands-on experience in their own offline self-study practical sessions, as they design and implement in our own home gardens.

This course will guide you through the process of designing your own permaculture landscape and lifestyle.
On top of all of this, upon completing this course, you will get the internationally recognised Permaculture Design Certificate.

You can choose to do the whole 11 day course, or dip into the modules that you are most interested in.
N.B. If you do only want to attend certain individual modules, you need to have completed the first module: “An introduction to permaculture” before attending any other module sessions.
You will only receive the permaculture design certificate once you have attended all 11 modular sessions but you can take as long as you wish to obtain the accreditation.

Each module is a stand-alone course in its own right and can be received in any order you choose providing the introductory module 1 is completed first.
The 10th and 11th modules are only attended once all other modules are covered.
