Summary:

- Introduction to Permaculture
- Delivered by Nenya and Jenny of NonStuff Industries

Permaculture is a way of designing nature-friendly, low carbon, productive systems based on three ethics: Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. It is an ecological, holistic design system which allows us to meet our needs for food, shelter, health and other aspects of well-being, while at the same time enhancing the natural environment.

Permaculture can be applied everywhere and at any scale – whether a farm, smallholding, community space, allotment or small urban garden. Although most closely associated with designing land-based projects and food production, you can use the same principles to design your home, business and entire life, to create more abundant, enjoyable and sustainable outcomes.

This 2-day Introduction course gives participants an overview of Permaculture, exploring its key principles, ethics and design tools. We’ll explore how Permaculture is used in designing food growing systems, but also look at how the principles can be applied in the personal and social spheres.

There’ll be a good mix of theory, discussion and design examples. The course is participant-centred, and there’s a definite element of creativity.

Summary:

The Threshold Centre is a land based cohousing community in North Dorset. Established in 2004, the centre has continuously followed permaculture principles and hosted a number of permaculture courses over the years. It acts as a demonstration and educational centre for community living in an ecologically sound way.

Two of the members of the community will host a morning of teaching and discussion and an afternoon of practical work and discussions on the Threshold Centre land. Peter Sherwood-Roberts has many years experience of teaching and implementing permaculture projects in Australia, Spain and the UK. Linda Philp has been at the Threshold Centre since its inception and has applied permaculture design and implementation techniques at the centre and assisted with other courses at Threshold.

We will explore how nature works and how the permaculture design principles can be applied to the land, to community and to well-being, and how this has evolved at the centre over the years.

This is a one day course, however participants are welcome to stay at the centre in our farmhouse guest accommodation.

Summary:

This course will give you a wide ranging introduction to permaculture as an approach to designing more sustainable ways of living and working on the Earth. It will give you a good grounding in the core elements of a permaculture approach including the ethical framework or values that underpin it, the principles from nature that it draws on, and a design framework for applying them. In the course you will be encouraged to explore and consider the issues that matter to you in your life and work, as well as offered plenty of practical examples of permaculture in action in a wide range of contexts. The course is held at the inspirational Centre for Alternative Technology, where there are lots of practical demonstrations, and you will also undertake a small group exercise during which you will develop a permaculture design for a designated area (e.g. piece of land or a building). You also have the opportunity to study for the full Permaculture Design Certificate by continuing onto Permaculture 2 and 3 (contact Angie for details and to enrol). Feedback from a recent course: "I absolutely loved the course last weekend. I loved your style of teaching and the fun we had, yet we still managed to learn so much. Your passion for permaculture inspired me and I left buzzing and I'm still feeling very excited at learning more. I know I will look back in the future and remember your co
