Summary:

This course will give you a wide ranging introduction to permaculture as an approach to designing more sustainable ways of living and working on the Earth. It will give you a good grounding in the core elements of a permaculture approach including the ethical framework or values that underpin it, the principles from nature that it draws on, and a design framework for applying them. In the course you will be encouraged to explore and consider the issues that matter to you in your life and work, as well as offered plenty of practical examples of permaculture in action in a wide range of contexts. The course is held at the inspirational Centre for Alternative Technology, where there are lots of practical demonstrations, and you will also undertake a small group exercise during which you will develop a permaculture design for a designated area (e.g. piece of land or a building). You also have the opportunity to study for the full Permaculture Design Certificate by continuing onto Permaculture 2 and 3 (contact Angie for details and to enrol). Feedback from a recent course: "I absolutely loved the course last weekend. I loved your style of teaching and the fun we had, yet we still managed to learn so much. Your passion for permaculture inspired me and I left buzzing and I'm still feeling very excited at learning more. I know I will look back in the future and remember your course as a turning point in the way I live my life."

What the course will be like

We work to create a supportive and collaborative space where we can discuss important issues and learn in a playful and effective way.

We provide well prepared sessions based on good evidence and our own experience of using permaculture in our homes, gardens and community projects. The course is lively, participatory and thought provoking. There is a mix of group work, individual reflection, videos, slide shows, practical active sessions and great food!

We will cover

* Ethics & principles
* Design tools & processes
* Examples of permaculture
* An observation exercise, practical exercise or walk
* An overview of the permaculture network and how to find out more.

What we will learn together

Through the exercises and examples you will see how we can rethink our homes, communities and lives to be more productive, less polluting and more life-affirming. By the end of the two days you will be able to explain permaculture to other people and have some tools to take away and use. For some people, the intro course is enough to start a lifetime journey of discovery and action!

What to bring

* Food to share. Please label the food and try to avoid lots of packaging.
* Project information. If you are working on a project, then bring along any photos, maps or drawings that will help others to understand it.
* Practical clothes for outdoors.
* Notebook, pens, books or magazines to share.

How to do a Permaculture Design- Weekend Workshop

PRICE £120 (concessions are possible on request)

This workshops teaches you to think like a permaculture designer. There are certain basic skills to learn and a set of ecological principles that will help you get the most out of any project. Permaculture has it’s own tools, frameworks and techniques that have been developed, this will be your chance to start using them. Bring along your own project to have a go with- garden, house, land, business or community group? Learn how to create a more abundant and fruitful situation just by thinking differently and designing (planning) things so you know what, where and when you will be doing things.

If you have heard of Looby Macnamara's design web and you would like to learn how to use it- this course is for you!

The workshop will be a mixture of talks, lecture, discussions, video, slide presentation, activities, and drawing. We will be walking in nature and in a live permaculture project to demonstrate what we are learning…and make it easier to remember!
