The Silphion Project was set up to research and develop the cultivation of northern temperate medical plants. By reducing wild collection, cultivation aids the preservation of genetic diversity and thus the robustness and evolutionary potential of remaining wild populations. By cultivating medicinal plants, the project is contributing to their conservation. The projects focus is North American medicinal plants. They have been prescribed by Medical Herbalists in Britain for over 150 years and are also used in other European countries. Many of those commercially available are collected from the wild. The project is working on a botanical reference collection, cultivation trials, databases are collected in the wild.
