New Scottish group developing

The Association is supporting a new Scottish working group to form. An initial meeting is to be held on the 13th February. If you live in Scotland and want more details please contact Sally Wilkin. If you are unable to attend on the 13th, but want to add your thoughts, please contact Graham Bell, who has offered to ensure that we get a really good spread of views.

We are seeking to help set up a working group that can start to take on a more strategic role in Scotland - responding to national opportunities, seeking funding for Scotland wide projects (extending the LAND project for example) and making best use of current projects, tutors and resources.

Grey to green - CABE launch public debate on green infrastructure.

CABE have launched a new green infrastructure discussion document 'Grey to Green: How we shift funding and skills to green our cities'.

CABE - the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment - say "Green infrastructure does not receive anything like the investment or management that goes into grey infrastructure. Grey to Green will fuel a debate about whether this is smart, given the dangers of climate change and the opportunities to improve public health. It also reveals the urgent need for more people, with the right skills, to manage the living landscape of our towns and cities. Grey to Green provides fresh ideas and evidence, showing how we could design and manage places in radically different ways. It will be of interest to anyone involved in greening the built environment, but above all to the people taking decisions about where to commit public money at a local and a national level."

We agree that more people, with the right skills, need to be enabled to manage the living landscape of our towns and cities, and thing permaculture design has a big contribution to make, especially around making Green Infrastructure skills and thinking more widely available to the public.

Mysterious creature seen fuming in Shropshire

A mysterious new creature has been seen fuming and belching smoke in a quiet tree filled field in Shropshire. Residents of the Karuna project have reported that the mysterious creature even makes pizza and bread, which is very helpful really. OK, so its not really a dragon, but a wonderful earth oven, that was inspired by the oven at eco-works, seen by Janta during the LAND project launch.

Find out more about how they made their earth oven by going to the Karuna website - a really good how to photo story!

New grant for LAND project

The LAND project received another boost today with a new £10,000 grant. This secures the rest of the match funding needed for year two. The grant was given by the Garfield Weston Foundation, and will enable us to host regional events and support groups to visit demonstration and learning projects. Andy Goldring, Chief Executive said "This is a welcome boost for a brilliant project - LAND is shaping up to be a really valuable new network that will help engage people from all walks of life in permaculture."

International Permaculture Convergence great success

The ninth international permaculture convergence held in Malawi is over, and has been hailed as a great success.

Significant steps forward included the launching of Plan Africa, a new network that aims to:

  • assess the current sustainable living situation in Africa
  • create a forum for the discussion of issues regarding sustainable development in Africa
  • connect Permaculture practitioners and sustainable farmers throughout Africa
  • establish what practicing Permaculturists need in order for them to increase their productivity
  • develop a plan for creating food and nutrition security and food sovereignty in Africa
  • mobilise funding and resources to meet these aims

The Association supported Aaron Kalala Karumba from the Democratic Republic of Congo to attend the event, thanks to generous members who raised over £2000.
