I started The Village Bakery in Melmerby, Cumbria in 1976 and ran it until 2002 since when I have been teaching breadmaking under the name Bread Matters. In 2006 I wrote a book (Bread Matters) which won the Andre Simon prize and ruffled a few feathers by revealing the adulteration and poor quality of much industrial bread. I helped to found the Real Bread Campaign in 2008. In 2010 Bread Matters moved to Lamancha, just south of Edinburgh, where we run baking courses and are developing an agro-forestry project on 5 acres of upland. In April 2011, we will be offering a new course – Skilling Up for Powerdown – aimed at 17-24 year olds who want to learn how to do more with less.
