Leaving a legacy

We are very grateful that you have thought of supporting permaculture in this way.

You don't have to be rich to leave a legacy, or leave a large amount.

The Permaculture Association is a small, effective organisation where a small bequest can make a big difference.

There are different ways you can leave a legacy in your will. These examples give suggested wording, which you may choose to discuss with your solicitor when writing your will:

If you'd like to leave a specific sum of money:
I give to Permaculture Association, BCM Permaculture Association, London WC1N 3XX, Registered charity number 1116699 (England and Wales) and SC041695 (Scotland), the sum of £xxx , for their general purposes and the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

If you'd like to leave a residuary legacy:
I give (xxx per cent) of the residue of my estate both real and personal to Permaculture Association, BCM Permaculture Association, London WC1N 3XX, Registered charity number 1116699 (England and Wales) and SC041695 (Scotland), for their general purposes and the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

If you'd like to leave a property as a legacy:
I give my property known as xxx or any other property which I may own at the date of my death to Permaculture Association, BCM Permaculture Association, London WC1N 3XX, Registered charity number 1116699 (England and Wales) and SC041695 (Scotland) and I request (without imposing any binding trust or obligation) that if possible it be used to xxx.

If you'd like to leave a legacy for a specific purpose:
I give to Permaculture Association, BCM Permaculture Association, London WC1N 3XX, Registered charity number 1116699 (England and Wales) and SC041695 (Scotland), the sum of £xxx and I express the wish that this legacy be used for the benefit of the xxx project and the receipt of the proper officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge for my Trustees.

If you are considering leaving a legacy of property or land to the Permaculture Association we would encourage you to contact the office to discuss how your gift might be used.

What is the difference between leaving a specific sum of money and a residuary legacy?
If you decide at the time you write your will the specific amount you want to leave to the Permaculture Association, this is called a pecuniary legacy. Its real value may decrease over time, due to inflation.

With a residuary legacy you decide what percentage of your estate you want to leave to the Permaculture Association. This kind of legacy is not lessened by the rate of inflation. It is paid from the residue or remainder of your estate after other debts, liabilities and specific bequests have been made.

How do I ensure that all my beneficiaries receive what I want, when I do not know how much my estate will be worth when I die?

You could leave your estate in percentages. For example, if your estate is currently valued at £100,000 and you wished to leave a beneficiary 25% of the value of your estate, they would receive £25,000.

If the value of your estate has gone up or down at the time of your death the beneficiary would still receive 25%, but it would be worth more if the value of the estate has gone up, and worth less if the value of the estate has gone down.
