There can be no question that the world faces unprecedented challenges on many fronts. Permaculture is not a 'magic bullet' that solves everything. However, because permaculture takes an integrated and holistic approach, permaculture solutions do tend to solve many different challenges simultaneously.

On this page we will identify key challenges and give links to areas of the website that demonstrate the permaculture response. We will take problems and show solutions that are being used in the UK and around the world. This will include permaculture responses to:

  • Climate change
  • Energy depletion (peak oil / peak gas)
  • Water pollution, privatisation and scarcity
  • Resource depletion (phosphorus, soil, etc)
  • Biodiversity loss
  • Deforestation
  • Desertification
  • Other habitat destruction (e.g. wetlands)
  • Poverty, debt and inequality
  • Conflict and warfare
  • Over consumption and resource use
  • Genetic engineering
  • Sea level rise
  • Ocean acidification
  • Fisheries depletion
