…as a teacher
There are many ways that you can get involved in permaculture as a teacher. First of all it is worth establishing what your situation is, then we will look at useful steps forward for each case.
- You are already using permaculture and want to get involved in teaching adults (adult education).
- You are already using permaculture and want to get involved in teaching children and young people by supporting work in schools, or having children and young people visit your project.
- You are already working as a primary or secondary school teacher and want to bring permaculture ideas into the curriculum.
- You are already working as a tutor in an FE or HE college/ university and you want to bring permaculture into your course.
There are different strategies for each case and examples of where others have done similar things.
You use permaculture and want to get involved in teaching adults
Suggested strategies and actions include:
- Contact the Learning Cooordinator to register your interest
- Attend an introduction to teaching weekend
- Attend a Training of Trainers course
- Atttend a PTLLS course (Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
- Find apprentice opportunities, and support local introduction to permaculture courses, and full design courses (the Association can help with this)
- Build your skills and confidence with presentations to local groups
- Continue to deepen and broaden your permaculture skills and knowledge

You use permaculture and want to get involved in teaching children
Suggested strategies and actions include:
- Contact the Learning Cooordinator to register your interest
- Attend an introduction to teaching weekend
- Attend a Training of Trainers course
- Visit other projects and practitioners working with schools
- Give a presentation to teachers and governors about permaculture and your interest in the sustainability of the school
- Read up on the Government's sustainable school strategy so that you can show how your support and involvement can help them meet wider targets and goals
- Continue to deepen and broaden your permaculture skills and knowledge

You're a primary or secondary school teacher
Suggested strategies and actions include:
- Contact the Learning Cooordinator to register your interest
- Attend a permaculture design course to increase your own knowledge
- Contact the Association to find a local tutor or practitioner that can give a presentation to your fellow teachers / governors / parents or help develop a series of sessions for your class
- Contact other schools using permaculture to see how they have incorporated it into sessions, outdoor activities and physical infrastructure.
You're a tutor in an FE or HE college
Suggested strategies and actions include:
- Contact the Learning Cooordinator to register your interest
- Attend a permaculture design course to increase your own knowledge
- Contact the Association to find a local tutor or practitioner that can give a presentation to your class
- Contact other colleges using permaculture to see how they have incorporated it into sessions and courses.
